Emma's Hospital Visit

Clara and Emma finished out the first week of school with big smiles on their faces. Mommy picked them up and headed to NYC. Now, Mommy has been driving to the city for several months, but this time, Mommy went from 72nd Street and the Henry Hudson Parkway to 68th and York-to NY Presbyterian- all the way crosstown. Clara commented "Mommy, we're in the ciy. I need to put my butterfly wings on and fly."

Over the past month, Emma has been undergoing tests to figure out the reason for her severe constipation and this hospitalization and procedure was to "clean her out" and sort of reboot her system.

After getting the prescription for the xray in one building, Mommy took the ladies to the hospital for Emma's xray. Emma didn't like the idea of getting an xray- even though no one had to touch her- she just was scared. She screamed through it and thankfully, Auntie Alyssa was there and could watch Clara so Daddy could help Mommy and Emma. And, the xray was the easiest part of the day.

Then, it was off to admitting and Emma's room in the Pediatric Ward. Emma and Clara sat in the room and waited and watched tv. The doctor came and showed Mommy and Daddy the xray of Emma's tummy- and unfortunately, as expected, there was poop stuck everywhere.

The nurses tried to get the nose tube in and of course, Emma screamed- really, what 3 year old would put up with it (and no numbing medicine either). And, no sooner did they have it in, did Emma pull it right out. So, next plan... more waiting until it was decided that Emma would get an IV first and then would have her arms put in "no nos"- little cast type things that restrict her arm movement. By this time, Grandma Sylvia had come too to help. Clara was really great and played with Auntie Alyssa and Grandma Sylvia so nicely. Apparently, Clara sat down to eat dinner and stopped and said "I wait for Emma to eat."

In case you were wondering, she hated getting the IV in and kept screaming "get off of me. I want to go home. Get me out of here." It was so sad, she was so mad. But, she made it!

With Emma restrained, it was time to put the nose tube in again- and of course, there was screaming- but it was in. Emma calmed down- thank goodness for the tv/dvd player in the room and all of the dvds Mommy and Daddy packed. Daddy took Grandma to the bus and Clara home and Auntie Alyssa stayed.

Emma needed an xray to make sure the tube was in and she was so scared, she literally had to be on top of Mommy for her xray.. The technician told her to smile and she did- it was a cute moment in a not so fun day.

The medicine started finally around 9 and it took much longer than originally thought for her to poop- almost 7 hours (the docs thought it would be 45 min - 1 hr). Poor Emma was so uncomfortable, but she did it. The good news is that she slept on and off- and therefore, Mommy did too- next to her in her bed. Auntie was such a good sport and an awesome help and slept on the couch next to the bed.

Emma got sick a few times and vomited the fluids, but it wasn't too bad. She went two more times before Grandma came back in the morning. Daddy came with Clara - and it was cute- Clara came in to see Emma and asked what was in Emma's nose and sort of ran out. They have never been separate for a night, except for the first night of their lives when Emma was in the NICU.

Daddy asked Emma if she wanted a bottle of water and Emma said "that one is for Clara. she likes it." And, she did it again with the silly band princess bracelets the nurse gave her- Mommy gave them to her and she looked at them and said "Oh, these are for me and Clara.I'll give some to her."

Later this morning, Emma got another xray and was pretty calm and great news- she was mostly cleaned out! So, this afternoon, the gang all headed home! Tired, but glad it is over. The next step is an MRI on Monday. On the way home, Emma was already smiling and singing to her baby. By the time they were home, the ladies were back to arguing over coloring books and playing Cinderella.
